Road Trip to Pennsylvania

Omni Bedford Springs front entrance Pennsylvania

Our baby has morphed into a little tornado. He spends his waking hours spinning around the house, upending every object not tethered to a surface. We haven’t held him liable for damages yet because he reimburses us with smiles and laughs. With all of this energy bubbling through him, we thought he was ready for a short weekend trip to the countryside. After some googling, I came upon the idea of taking him to the Omni Bedford Springs Resort, a […]

The Amish Buffalo

Normal people don’t get their dairy products from a cooler in as stranger’s backyard. They go to the grocery store and stand in line and pay for their milk and cheese and butter and whatever else can be made from what a cow squirts out of its udders. I don’t fall into that category. During the last month I’ve been on an organic food adventure, one that involves a private club that sells water buffalo and camel milk to city […]

New Hope, PA

New Hope and Ivyland Rail Station

During the same weekend as my visit to Great Falls in Paterson, New Jersey I stopped for a few hours in New Hope, Pennsylvania, a little town on the Delaware River about 10 miles northwest of Trenton, New Jersey. Gettysburg, PA

Dog at Little Round Top, Gettysburg

As a history buff and Army veteran, I am interested in Civil War battlefields. There is probably no other city in the country better situated than Washington, DC for touring the battlefields of Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Most are within a 2 hour drive away. Having seen Fredericksburg, Manassas, and Antietam, I figured I drive up to Gettysburg, PA to see the big one. Trip Logistics:From DC, Gettysburg is a nice drive up I270 through Frederick, MD and Route 15 […]

I-95 (Philadelphia and New Castle, DE)

I-95 I’ve been driving up and down I-95 between Washington, DC and northern New Jersey since 2008. The 240 mile trip lasts about 5 hours with normal traffic, but at peak rush hour times and especially on Thanksgiving eve, the drive becomes intolerable. This is the most densely populated stretch of highway in the nation, I believe, so driving anywhere on this highway the night before Thanksgiving is not a good idea. I’ve learned my lesson; I now take Amtrak […]

Road Trip from DC to Detroit

Detroit graffiti

Cities visited: Cumberland, MD; Fallingwater, PA; Pittsburgh, PA; Toledo, OH; Detroit, MI; Dearborn, MI; Akron, OH; Kent State University, OH; Hagerstown, MD Last fall, when I was still a U.S. government employee, the government shutdown kept me at home for two weeks. Rather than just sit at home and wait for the call to come back to work, I decided to get off the couch and embark on road trip to a city I had heard so much about but […]
